Tea tree oil (melaleuca alternifolia) has been used for hundreds of years among the aborigine tribes in Australia for many different things. They have used the leaves in tea for many different ailments, and it is truly one of Australia’s gifts to the world.
Although are many- over 300 types of tea tree species- only the oil from the melaleuca alternifolia species has been shown to have the remarkable properties that tea tree oil is famous for.
Today, tea tree oil is in demand worldwide for it’s many beneficial properties. It contains the powerful antiseptic compound terpinen 4-ol, which is what makes it it an excellent anti-bacterial, however it is also anti-fungal and anti-viral. This threefold benefit of oil from the tea tree, being anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral is why it has been called nature’s first aid kit.
During WWII Australian soldiers were given tea tree oil as their first aid kit. Every household should have some on hand.
Important: Not all tea tree oil has the benefits tea tree oil is known for. Australian Standards Association has required that the oil have at least 30% terpinen, and under 15% Cineole (which helps the oil penetrate, but can be an irritant). Our company only carries the best tea tree oil, in 2 strengths: 36% terpinen and 5% Cineole, or 40% and 3% which is for those with more sensitive skin, or who want a more potent formula.
Unfortunately the U.S. has no requirements for the levels of terpinen in tea tree oil sold here, so there are some companies that sell a substandard oil that would be illegal according to the Australian Standards Association. Buyer beware!
